Task 1.2 Optimized design of filters (PhD)

Objectives and Research content:

Design optimization of filters will be carried out on the filter topology (low-pass filter, trap filters bank, combination of both) and the materials adopted for inductors and capacitors.

In particular the topology will be chosen depending on the filter connection and on its function in respect to voltage or current harmonics elimination.

Moreover, the optimization will aim to minimize volume, e.g. based on installed reactive power, and the cost of the filter. The optimization of the material will be carried out considering both the fundamental frequency and the ripple.

The objective is also to define a theoretical framework which will be valid not only for linear analysis, but also for all the non-linear phenomena connected to the physical nature of the filter components – it is a similar way as it has been done in the past for electrical machines.

The overall mission in Harmony is to investigate whether it is possible to establish a reliable power system which has a dominant amount of power electronics based sources and loads by means of analysis tools and control.
